Recently I had the opportunity to show off Philadelphia to a visitor who had never been here. He was in from California to work with me on a project. After an all day session, I was driving him to The City Tavern in the historic section of the city; not far from Independence Hall and the Constitution Center. The City Tavern promises visitors an authentic experience of what a meal would have been like in 1776; complete with warm beer and the dishes of the day. This is a far cry from the cheesesteaks the city is now known for.
As we were driving to the restaurant and passed the Liberty Bell and I was listening to him react to seeing "it" for the first time, it occurred to me how much for granted we locals take being surrounded by all of this history without putting much thought into it.
The reality is that our Founding Father's showed unbelievable courage in forging our nation and challenging the British at a time when that meant taking on a world's power. What fortitude and bravery they showed in standing up for what they believed in and were willing to fight for.
It was refreshing to see the power of these historic landmarks through the eyes of the newly initiated. A reminder that the ability to influence change and create something from a vision and an idea is available to us all.
Perhaps that the real American dream. The ability to make an idea reality. That is pretty awesome.
Happy 4th.
